A Study on Positive Self-Concept in Mothers of the Mentally Retarded Children



Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect on socio-democratic variables psychological variables on the positive self-concept of mothers in the families which has mentally retarded children. 380 mothers with mentally retarded children attending special schools in Seoul, Pusan, Taegu, Sunchon, Chongju, Chonju, Kwangju were employed in this study.
The questionnare consisted of the items developed by Jung(1968) to measure mothers¢¥ self-concept, and the items to examine socio-psychological variables. Data were analyzed by regression analysis, cannonical analysis, and anova.
The results of this were summerized as follows:
The criterian variable(total self-concept) was explained by the satisfaction of family life, marrital life, health, husband¢¥s level of education, and family income. As a result, psychological varibales had greater effect on self-concept than socio-democratic varibles did.
The physical self-concept and family self-concept of all 5 self-concept variables were only explained by the satisfaction of health and family life of all 5 psychological variables. The different psychological variables had different effect on self-concept variables.
The family size, spuose¢¥s occupation, kind of the mentally retarded children, and the occurance of the mentally retarded showed significant differences in self-concept.
